THE PROGRAM

The overall program consists of two main phases. The first phase is an introduction phase. During this 3-year phase you will rotate to different functional roles, becoming a multi disciplinary professional while retaining your engineering background. Successful completion of this first phase of the traineeship will be followed by a second phase where you will develop yourself via a fast track to a high performance professional position within Fluor.

Starting September 2015, the first phase of the traineeship consists of four rotational assignments of 9 months each, to different project disciplines. At least one of these rotations is carried out on an (international) assignment, preferably at a construction site.
Besides rotating over different disciplines, the traineeship provides an extensive and dedicated training program that runs in parallel with the rotational assignments.

ELIGIBILITY

You are eligible when you have a:
• Bachelor degree in a technical area, preferably:
o Civil Engineering
o Chemical Engineering
o Mechanical Engineering
o Electrical Engineering
• Master degree*, either technical or business / management related
• Understanding of / interest in the Chemical and Oil & Gas Industry

* Degree must have been obtained prior to the starting date of the traineeship.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The selection procedure consists of an Introduction Day at Fluor Amsterdam in April for eligible candidates. 

A maximum of 20 candidates will be invited to participate in the next stage: two intensive Selection Days in June where your skills will be assessed thoroughly. Of the candidates selected for participation in the Selection Days, only a few will be selected for the traineeship.

INVOLVED DISCIPLINES

Project Controls

Project Controls is in general typified as the “ears and eyes” of Project Management. Structuring projects is essential for this and is the first task to be performed on the job. As projects progress, the actual status is constantly monitored and compared to the plan. Deviations are being analyzed and corrective measures are identified and applied in order to keep the project in line with cost and schedule targets.

As a Project Controls engineer you have a very dynamic and central position within the project team. Project data and information needs to be obtained from all different disciplines and discussed and analyzed in order to come to reliable predictions or forecasts in term of cost and schedule. Furthermore you play an important role in Risk Management and projecting project profitability. Results are reported and presented both internally as well as to our Clients.

Procurement/Contracting

On our projects, the Procurement function is responsible for approximately 80% of the Total Installed Costs. The Material Management group makes sure that the right materials are available at the right place, the right time and at the right price. This involves Material Planning and Control, Purchasing, Expediting, Inspection, Logistics and Warehousing.

The Contract Management group makes sure the right Contractors are selected to perform Services such as outsourced Engineering, Design Validation and actual Construction, and they manage these Contractors during the execution of the Services.

During the pre-Construction phase of the project we interface heavily with Engineering to develop good scopes of work for Materials or Services, and with Project Controls for the timing and cost aspects. During Construction our presence at the jobsite allows us to effectively manage scope changes and actively participate in successful Project completion.

Important skills for our function include technical knowhow, commercial awareness, desire for results, being a team player, good communicator, particular with our external suppliers and contractors.

Estimating

The Estimating group is responsible for the preparation of all kind of budgets for the projects and the proposals performed by the Fluor Amsterdam office. This could be a budget for our clients to support them in project decisions and their business cases, but it could also mean a detailed estimate to support a Fluor proposal to win potential new work. A budget could be a capital cost budget for the full facility but also a budget for Fluor’s own services for a specific project.

To determine these budgets, the full scope needs to be properly quantified and priced to limit risks associated in the execution of the project for Fluor and their clients. To do this, it is important that the estimator can translate a 2 dimensional scope of work from the drawings into a 3D scope of work with the associated activities applicable for the specific project location in the world, required to execute the work properly and price it accordingly.

Within the estimating group, commercial mindset, risk awareness and scope interpretation are standard skills which you will learn to develop during the assignment in this discipline.
